Tips to Enjoy a Healthy 4th of July
The Fourth of July is full of fun, fireworks, and generally lots of food! Here are some tips to help you navigate the barbeques, buffets, and parties without compromising your health.
1. Eat healthily in the days and hours leading up to the event! If you are someone who tends to overindulge, aim to maintain a healthy diet in the days before the event. Eat more fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins and less refined sugars and carbohydrates. Also be sure to drink plenty of water. Then, the day of the event, enjoy a healthy breakfast or lunch before you head out. By properly nourishing and hydrating your body, you are less likely to overindulge, and you can enjoy your favorite holidays fares (in moderation), without feeling guilty.
2. Drink responsibly. While adult juices and punches are all the craze, premade drinks offer you no control over the amount of alcohol or sugar you are consuming. Consider opting for an alcoholic beverage mixed with soda water or a light beer or wine. Also be sure to drink water in between adult drinks to ensure you stay hydrated and control your alcohol intake.
3. Include healthy options at your barbeque or buffet. A big part of celebrating is eating food you enjoy! You can do so by eating in moderation. Consider adding chicken or lean beef to your barbeque menu and fresh fruits and vegetable platters to your sides. By balancing your menu with both healthy and more indulgent fares, both you and your guests can enjoy your meals without overindulging on unhealthy dishes.
