September is Healthy Aging Month and we want to help you start, or keep, living your best life! Here are ten tips to help you reinvent yourself this month and beyond!

  1. While acting your age is appropriate in many regards, sometimes doing so can be a disservice. Especially if you’re part of the aging population. This about your current age and then remember your best year so far. Was it 27, 35, 40? Your present age? Picture yourself at that age and embrace it! A new perspective and some positive thinking goes a long way towards feeling better about yourself.
  2. Be positive in your conversations and your actions every day. When you catch yourself complaining, check yourself and change the conversation to something positive. Reducing time spent watching local and national news casts can also help shift your perspective and help you (re)gain a more positive outlook on life.
  3. Surround yourself with positivity. Consider distancing yourself from friends who complain all the time, constantly talk about how awful everything is, or just generally emit a negative energy. These kinds of people will only depress you and stop you from moving forward. Surround yourself with energetic, happy, positive people of all ages and you will be happier too.
  4. Walk tall. Though it may sound simple, walking with confidence not only boosts your own confidence but also makes you appear more confident to others.
  5. Mind your posture. By standing up straight, sitting with your shoulders pulled back, and holding your head high, you’ll not only keep your body in better alignment but also help improve circulation and your mood.
  6. Smile! Research shows people who smile more often are happier. Furthermore, dental health and good oral health are the gateway to your overall well-being so be sure to brush and floss daily and visit your dentist for a professional cleaning every 6 months.
  7. Be social. Especially if you tend to self-isolate or are more introverted. Social interactions go a long way in making you feel more connected and purpose driven. Seek opportunities to engage with friends and loved ones, volunteer your time, take a class, invite a friend to share a meal or coffee, or become involved in a community group.
  8. Go for a walk. Whether solo or with a pet, walking through the neighborhood is good for both your physical health and mental. Plus, you can get to know your neighbors and get a better feel better connected to your community.
  9. Schedule your annual physical and other health screenings.
  10. Find a new hobby or rededicate yourself to an old one. Whether art, music, woodworking, dancing, or something else, spending some time enjoying an artistic hobby can help reset your mind and allow you to recalibrate before the holiday season.

Make it a great month!
